Match Report
Sherborne Girls Inters vs  ESAA Cross Country Cup
On: Wednesday, 11 Oct 2017
Venue: Away

The day didn't start as well as we had expected with a number of girls from the junior team withdrawing at the last moment with injury and illness meaning that the junior team had to be scratched from the event.

This meant that a small group of girls, which included Marianna (capt), Daisy, Millie, Florence and Amber all travelled to Sailsbury to represent the school as our Intermediate Team.

After arriving early, the girls had time to walk the course with the schools cross country coach and they then prepared themselves for the race.

In bracing conditions, a field of around 50 athletes sprinted from the start line and they all soon settled into two separate groups. After about the first 1,000m of racing, several white Sherbore Girls vests could be seen in the leading pack as they headed up the long steep section of the course. It was at this point that the Sherborne Girls seemed to make their move. The girls gained momentum along the long undulating section at the top of the hill before negotiation the downhill section leading to flat ground. The final flat 500+ meters became a sprint finish and Marianna demonstrated real determination to out sprint the fast finishing opposition to win the race. Daisy finished in third position. Sherborne girls also filled 13th, 20th and 23rd positions in the race. The final results have not been published but we are very confident that Sherborne Girls will progess through to the next round of the ESSA National Cross Country Cup competition.
