Sherborne Girls Inters vs  ESAA Cross Country Cup - Regional finals
On: Saturday, 10 Nov 2018
Venue: Away

In true XC weather we set off from Sherborne with Dryrobes and wellies, on a day when plenty of other matches had been cancelled to compete at the regional finals of the ESAA cross cup at Downside school.

On our arrival the weather broke and in the blustery sunshine we set off to walk the course. It was relatively flat around playing fields before heading off onto a woodland path before re-entering the playing fields and a challenging up hill finish.

The girls were in a confident mood as they began their preparations, a few last minute struggles with spikes and a thorough warm up ensured they were ready and eager to run. A delay before the start ensured the weather closed in once again in true XC style, as the heavens opened, the wind picked up and the gun went for the start.

Bea Woods from South Wilts took an early commanding lead (daughter of Mr Woods, SG English teacher) showing her class as the number one runner in her age group in the country. Daisy led the SG team well placed in the chasing group with Marianna and Hebe in close pursuit. With every place crucial to the overall result it was encouraging to see our runners working their way up the field.

With no immediate results we were quietly confident with our in house scoring and analysis at the finish of a good outcome with Daisy 6th, Marianna 9th, Hebe 11th, Emily 23rd, Charlotte 25th, Selene 34th.

A nervous wait ensued as other regional results appeared on the ESAA website throughout the afternoon and evening and finally at 7.40pm some 7 hrs after the finish they were up. Hesitantly opening the results it was a huge disappointment to see us in 4th place and out of the qualifying positions.... but surely this wasn’t correct. Further analysis saw the error ...Daisy’s result was missing!

An email to the organisers explaining and a very anxious wait for confirmation and then it was up and official. We had come an amazing 2nd place and as a result have qualified for the ESAA Cross Country Cup National Finals later this month in Suffolk.

Well done to the whole team Daisy, Marianna, Hebe, Emily, Charlotte, Selene and Zara we are so proud of you all. Your hard work and resilience in training at school and at Wimborne AC has really paid off!
