Match Report
Sherborne Girls U18A Girls vs  Cheltenham Ladies' College
On: Saturday, 07 Sep 2019
Venue: Away

The first weekend of the season is the perfect opportunity to see as many of the senior players as possible play in non-competitive matches and put into practice some of the themes from our pre-season training.

Our 2 teams were full of enthusiasm for our match on Saturday evening against CLC and both groups of girls played exceedingly well. We were playing the new 10 a-side rules and with people who had not played together before. The teams gelled immediately and the coaches were very impressed with the cohesion, particularly in defence.

Our meal out in Cheltenham was a great way to bond as a team and following the delicious pizzas, we continued North to Shrewsbury. A well earned night in the Travelodge preceded an early start and a relatively short drive to Moreton Hall. The tournament organisers put an emphasis on a non-competitive element and the chance to try and develop the new rules.

This promised to be a long day and each team had 6 games scheduled. As we were carrying a few niggles and running small squads, we decided to amalgamate both teams wherever possible.

The new U5 fitted straight into their new teams and their skill and match IQ were impressive. A number of M5 came with us in order to fill places of girls who were unavailable and these girls really rose to the challenge, lapping up the physicality and pace of the game.

The U6 showed excellent leadership skills and made a huge different to the cohesion of the group and the L6 who played continued to make an impact with their versatility throughout the pitch.

It was a long weekend but a huge thank you to all the girls who were great company and will benefit hugely from having played so many 10-aside matches before the county tournament this coming weekend.
