Sherborne Girls Seniors vs  Clayesmore Classic
On: Thursday, 10 Jan 2019
Venue: Away

We have started the term in good form, a turnout of 40 runners in our first endurance training session on Tuesday followed by 22 getting on the bus to travel to Clayesmore . We lost a few to injuries still recovering after the Christmas break but they are looking hopeful to compete on the circuit soon.

Thank you to Clayesmore for moving this Classic race to a Thursday from the previous Saturday slot. This enabled us to have such a large turnout in this first race of the term. A perfect opportunity to run off the Christmas turkey and look to get up to speed before the main event of the Dorset County Championships next week.

For some of our younger runners this would be their first outing running the intermediate distance, due to no junior race and this would be a real test, a course some 4.3km long.

There was real positivity on arrival at the course, despite the really chilly conditions. Christa and Emily led a well drilled warm up under the guidance of coach Ian. With little waiting around all the girls went to the start line together.

After a pile up at the start which saw Poppy and Zara in a heap on the floor they picked themselves up and quickly got back in the main pack.

Depsite being so early in the early in the term the race set off at a fast pace, probably due to the inclusion of the Intermediate boys also running the same distance but also with Emily S from Bryanston leading the way for the girls.

The winners completed the course in a little over 16 minutes and it was fabulous to see Marianna, Daisy and Hebe coming home very strongly commanding the 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. Hebe finishing in 4th should be very pleased with her race coming in as the leading Junior Girl (Yr 9) by a considerable margin and this augurs well for selection next week. All our runners did incredibly well and looked in good form coming over the line, showing the strength and fitness from training last term has been rewarded. Other notable performances were Christa winning the Senior girls race, with Emily getting herself on the podium individually for the first time in a Sherborne Girls XC vest. Well done.

Our Westie did not disappoint, Birdie showing recent Parkruns have given her real strength and confidence at this distance and it is great to see her pacing is improving at the longer distances. Alice and Amaka were also newcomers at this distance and tackled the course confidently and should be pleased with their efforts.

It was fabulous to see so many mums there to support their daughters so early in the term. Thank you, we value your support and look to see you again soon.
