Sherborne Girls Inters vs  ESAA Cross Country Cup Regional Finals
On: Saturday, 09 Nov 2019
Venue: Away

We set off for the regional round of this ESAA Cross Country Cup in good spirits despite the torrential rain that decided to descend on us the minute we left Sherborne.

With coach Ian on the mini bus we made a detour to pick up Mrs Dart en route and then with our team complete we set off for Kings Taunton. Having competed here in the same competition three years ago we were familiar with the course. It is fast and flat, a distance of approximately 3km around the edge of the playing fields and incorporates two full laps of the course. On arrival, well equipped with our team dryrobes we walked the course despite the persistently heavy rain. The course was remarkably in good shape with only a few really muddy sections and whilst wet, we were glad to shake of the cobwebs from the journey and become familiar with the route.

We were delighted that as our start time of 12.30pm approached the rain clouds were thinning and brighter skies started to appear. Following a good warm up led by Ian we made our way to the start line, the rain had now stopped completely. With no pens on the line it was a free for all as our runners jostled for a good position.

The race started at a fast pace on the flattest section of the course, and as the runners settled into a good rhythm it was fabulous to see Hebe and Birdie right near the front of the field. This is the order they finished, Hebe in a wonderful 6th place and ahead of many of her rivals on the circuit with Birdie claiming a top ten finish. Anabel competing for SG for only the second time is quickly establishing herself as a determined and talented runner, was third scoring, with Selene finishing the quartet. Charlotte and Cora completed our team and both had finishes in the top half of the field.

Everyone one of our team performed to their best, and did all that was asked of them. The training is clearly paying off and to finish fourth in the South West Championships is a fantastic achievement. Gutted to narrowly miss the qualifying positions for the National Finals but incredibly proud of these fabulous group of young athletes. Exciting times ahead as the cross country season starts in earnest in January. Roll on 2020!
