Sherborne Girls Seniors vs  Milton Abbey Races
On: Thursday, 30 Jan 2020
Venue: Away

Despite recent cold weather and heavy rain, as we set off for Milton Abbey the conditions were favourable for a great afternoon of running. Mild, but with low cloud and almost no wind, it was only going to be the course and the underlying mud which would cause us any problems.

The route is always a true cross country challenge and this year was no exception, even after a few alterations to divert away from incredibly slippy slopes.

First up were the Inter girls taking on the 5 km course, we had selected another strong squad of 10 runners, all of whom were up to the task. The ritual to tape on shoes was completed before we made our way to the start line. With WAC team mate Emily Shaw in the lineup alongside former SG runner Daisy Baker, it was always going to be a fast and competitive race.

This is an age group where we have strength in numbers and despite a few absentees today we still looked formidable. Birdie continued her run of good form leading the way for SG with Hebe looking strong in hot pursuit. With four of our top six runners fresh from the challenge of the Parliament Hill race last weekend they looked confident taking on this tough course.

We were absolutely thrilled to see six of our endurance squad finishing in the top ten...demonstrating the quality and number of runners we have in our squad. Birdie, Hebe, Emily, Sophie, Selene and Charlotte claimed those spots. Charlotte deserves a special mention, having struggled with a chest complaint for a number of weeks, and still, far from better, had a fabulous run to finish in the top ten...very well done! Alice, our youngest runner had another good day, this time just keeping hold of her shoes and Jemima had one of her best runs so far, relishing the hills and longer distances. Clemmie and Kate completed the line up, looking comfortable over this longer distance.

Marianna had requested to run the senior course today, a brave decision considering the 6.8km distance and the formidable extra loop up a very tough hill, but after a fabulous finish in 33rd place on Hampstead Heath she was more than up for the challenge. She was accompanied by Emily, Eve, Isabel and Sophie, who was also running for the first time in an SG vest, all should be complimented after completing this incredibly tough course.

Marianna had an outstanding run, leading from the gun and crossing the line in first place taking the GOLD medal, she was joined by Birdie with the individual Inter BRONZE, and Birdie, Hebe, Emily and Sophie taking the Inter Team GOLD. Another fine afternoon of running for the squad...well done!!
