Sherborne Girls Juniors vs  South West Schools Championships, Kings Park
On: Saturday, 08 Feb 2020
Venue: Away

?With severe weather warnings in place for tomorrow and the imminent arrival of storm Ciara we were delighted that Saturday dawned beautifully bright and sunny. Warm conditions with a gentle breeze, absolutely perfect conditions for the South West Schools Cross Country. This year on home turf at at Kings Park, Bournemouth.

With all our runners familiar with the course we were able to take a leisurely journey to the race after a good lunch, as walking the course was not necessary on this occasion.

We met up with coach Ian in the Dorset team tent to collect running vests, numbers and for Anabel and Georgia their well earnt green Dorset County hoody’s.

With five girls from Sherborne Girls selected to race today we were full of anticipation as had good support from parents. The junior girls were racing first at 2.40pm around a fast and flat course in fantastic condition despite recent wet weather.

Birdie, Georgia and Anabel took to the start line in the unfamiliar pen set up, Birdie in a strong position of 4th in the pen. For Birdie she had plenty to prove following a very tough race at the County Championships, where full of cold and running with a temperature she showed incredibly resilience and determination to finish in a selection position but way off her best. Today fully fit she began strongly and worked hard to improve her position as the race progressed, her elevated position in the pen was justified as she came home ranked as the 3rd Dorset runner home. Everything being well this should give her every chance of selection for English Schools for a second year in succession. Georgia and Anabel running for the first time in the green of Dorset should be pleased with their performances at this level, a real learning curve and fundamentally valuable experience to build on in years to come. Well done!

Our second race of interest was in the Intermediate Girls where we had Marianna and Emily representing Dorset, amongst a very tough field not only from Dorset but from the other competing counties. From the gun, the race was led out in an incredibly fast pace by Bea Wood from Wiltshire, our own Sherborne Girls English teacher Mr Woods’ daughter. As Bea established a convincing and unassailable lead it was up to Marianna and Emily to work hard in the pack. Today however, proved to be a tough day out on the course and whilst a 5th place finish in the Dorset team should be enough to gain selection for English Schools, by her own admission it was a frustrating result for Marianna. She should however take heart that a tough race by her standards is still up there with the best in the county and should gain her selection for Sefton Park, Liverpool and her fourth successive English Schools appearance. Emily as always had a good run, looking strong on a fast course and completed the Dorset team.

Well done to all five girls, who once again excelled as part of the Sherborne Girls endurance squad!
