Sherborne Girls 1st XI Girls vs  The Gryphon School
On: Tuesday, 11 Feb 2020
Venue: Away

The girls took on The Gryphon School on their ground on Tuesday 11 February. The conditions were not ideal as a bumpy pitch combined with a gusting wind down the length of the pitch. Sherborne chose to play with the wind in the first half and managed to create some good chances with BeBe Fender showing her vision with some probing passes. Forwards Mia Clements and Alice Pope were always looking dangerous but didn’t quite manage to put the opposing goalkeeper under pressure.

The opposition had some good players who managed some efforts on our goal but good defensive play from Harriet Townhill and Ania Zenzina kept them at bay. Nicole Appleby battled hard throughout the game and made some goal saving challenges. Analisa Nabitaka and Charlotte Smith also provided good defensive cover as well as being a good source for playing the ball out from the back. Wide players Amara Agwo and Flora Williams also provided good attacking options in the first half.

In the second half we played against the wind but also made a lot of changes to let all 8 substitutes play. This season we are looking at getting a lot of participation, so girls get experience in playing. This can upset the balance of the team with so many changes but playing experience is vital this year in order for all to improve for next season. The opposition scored after a mis-control in defence allowed their player to stroke the ball past our goalkeeper. A second goal came in similar circumstances with the third being scored direct from a corner thanks to the wind blowing it in and the fourth from an unfortunate defensive header finding the back of our net.

It should be noted that our goalkeeper, Eve Messervy, had made numerous good saves during the game and was in no way to blame for any of the goals.

The girls who came on at various stages in the game all added to the team’s effort and provided good moments on the pitch.

Overall, it was a pleasing performance and although the score suggests a one-way victory, we were once again undone by some of our mistakes but also by the fact that the opposition had girls who have had more experience in playing football at a higher level. Even so, I can see improvement and development with this enthusiastic group of girls, we will get that first victory in the future.
