Sherborne Girls 1-1 Leweston School

The girls took on Leweston on their astro turf on Thursday 23 Janaury. This surface always changes the game as control and passing needs to be accurate. Our girls managed this and with our high pressing when Leweston had a goal kick we benefited when Alice Southcombe scored a good goal resulting from this pressure. The opposition clearly could not deal with this and as it was their first game we were asked if we could reduce pressure to allow the game to develop.

The defence played with a good shape and debutant Charlotte Smith had an excellent game at left back. In midfield Nicole Appleby was her usual combative self and made some crunching tackles and set up may attacks with her close dribbling skills.

In the second half Leweston came into the game more and we had to be thankful that Eve Messery made some good saves. However, we had not cleared the ball close to goal several times and it was only a matter of time before the opposition got their equaliser. This spurred on SG and there were many promising attacks without the final clinical finishing to add to the score. Imogen Knight made some mazy runs down the right-hand side and Alice Pope had a cracking shot that smashed off the post.

SG had many opportunities to seal the game but a session on shooting and finishing is going to be the focus in the next few training sessions.

Overall, it was a pleasing performance and we look forward to playing them again next half term with hopefully the win that we should have had.
