Coach's perspective

This is our toughest fixture of the season against The Gryphon, who have numerous club and county standard players. We didn't have the greatest of starts conceding 4 goals in the space of 10 minutes. A combination of the opposition's superior fitness and technique gave our girls a difficult time in keeping the ball. Some decision making under pressure saw us lose or give the ball away far too easily. We had periods of the game when we started make progress with some good link up play and during one of these saw Vicky Phillips dribble in to the area only to be fouled and earn a penalty. Lily Phipps stepped up and scored our only goal just before half time. Bea Walker came off at half time after a tough challenge form behind.

In the second half, the girls defended much better and were more compact in and around the area. Alice Payne ran her socks off in defending and then trying to set up attacks down the left side of the pitch. Nat Cheung played very well in the second half and she cancelled out numerous attacks down her side of the pitch. The Gryphon added two more directly from corners as the ball was helped by a vicious winds.

The final score was a 9-1 defeat but the girls now know what the standard they need to aspire to in terms of movement, technique and decision making. No player gave up and they all battled hard as they could. I could not ask more from them at this stage in their football development but we need to have them train at a faster pace in practices.

Well done for not giving up and always trying to play to the best of your ability.
