Sporting Highlights week ending 8 March

The headlines from this week’s sporting endeavours comes from the Lacrosse Nationals in Aldershot where we had 4 days of intense competition for our U18, U15 and U14 teams with plenty of mud, sweat and effort as the teams have battled it out to secure their place in the most challenging divisions. The 1st XII lacrosse team’s performance was excellent. After a hard-fought draw against Fettes College, we needed to win a minimum of 3 games to achieve the team’s goal of making Division 1. Being led by our defence line - Mrin, Annabel, Alice, Laila and Ella B - the team stood strong against Uppingham and completely out-played Cheltenham Ladies in a 3-1 victory. Mrin’s performance in goal for this game was truly a match winning performance and the girls used this moment of to crush The American School 10 – 0. At the end of day 1 we were in 3rd place in the pool which allowed us to qualify as one of the highest ranked schools in Division 1. The team went on to display the ability to change game plans and control the momentum of play but were sadly knocked out on day 2 following 1-win, 2-draws and a concluding game against St James’ Pauls where we unfortunately lost 3 – 4. The U15s had a challenging group from the start but played valiantly. They came away with a strong win against Claremont Fan but against tough opposition were knocked out of the competition in the early rounds. The U14s gave a spectacular account of how far they have come since the start of the term and although they didn’t make the final 16 they had some excellent games and were all smiles on the way home having had a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

Last weekend our netballers played in a challenging fixture against King’s College Taunton who provided us with some stiff competition. The final results reflected the strength of both schools but we were particularly delighted with the 1st team game in which both teams had moments in the lead. In the final quarter, Sherborne were hungry for a win and with an unshakeable defence we were able to turn over the ball to our advantage and secure a 35-31 win. Other wins included the U15B, U15C, U15D, U14A and U14B teams. The Westies also had a great fixture against Sandroyd, winning both their matches and showing great team spirit. Special congratulations to our U12A netball team who have qualified for the county tournament next week having won 3 games, drawn 2 and only lost 1 in the North Dorset championships this week.

For those following the equestrian circuit, we have some good news to report. Anna and Tilly, who competed at Bicton, in both the 90 and 100 cm NSEA Inter Schools’ Show Jumping classes as individuals achieved great results with Tilly coming 2nd in the 100 cm class, which takes her through to the NSEA Show Jumping final at Hickstead in May, and Anna was placed 6th in the 100 cm class. At the Kings Equestrian Centre, Sedgemore in the NSEA Eventers’ Challenge with wet and windy weather, Grace and Molly competed in the 90 and 100 classes. Both of them had good clear rounds in the 90cm and 100cm classes with Grace winning the 90 cm class qualifying her for the NSEA Eventers’ Challenge Championships at Hickstead in May. None of these events can happen without enormous support of the parents for which we are extremely grateful.
