Sporting Highlights week ending 24 May

Today we look forward to welcoming Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE who will be running a 2 hour coaching session for our performance hockey players. Kate is the most capped female hockey player in Britain’s history, and was captain of the GB and England women’s hockey teams for 13 years. She is also a Gold Olympic medal holder following the Rio Olympic games in 2016 and we look forward to hearing her speak at tonight’s 1st Teams Sports Dinner and Award Ceremony.

Last weekend saw the tennis team take on tough opponents, Canford School. The games were very evenly matched and the results reflected the calibre of play with an even spread of wins and losses. The U18 A match was unfortunately abandoned due to a tropical rainstorm but there were some impressive performances from both sides. The C and D teams were in action against Clayesmore and came away with a clean sweep of wins.

On Saturday we hosted Canford, Kings Bruton and Leweston School in an all-girls meet for U16 and U18’s. The first races were the 100m individual medley and we were convincingly led out for a win by Angelina, with Erin, Harriet and Penelope following suit. We did not have it all our own way but looked in really good form all afternoon winning the majority of the heats. A special mention and thanks to the M5 sports leaders who were responsible for the timekeeping.

We have a very busy athletics programme on our return from the half-term break. Twenty-seven Sherborne girls have qualified to compete in the Dorset Schools Athletics Championships which takes place in Bournemouth on the 8 June. Four days later, our Intermediate Girls team, will travel to Millfield to compete in the English Schools Athletics Association Team Cup semi-finals.

A few dates to bear in mind for the future:

  • Sports Day will be held on Saturday 22 June starting at 12.30 and parents are very much encouraged to attend and bring a picnic to share with their daughters. Houses will cater for girls whose parents can’t attend.
  • Pre-Season for hockey and lacrosse will be running 29 -31 August 2019. Girls will be asked to arrive at 16.30 on Thursday 29 August ready for a 17.00 start and will be available to be collected on the afternoon of Saturday 31 August after close of play.
