Sporting Highlights week ending 12 Sep 2019

After a very successful pre-season with over 80 lacrosse and hockey players attending, we have started the season in good form.

On Saturday the U14 A and B teams won against King Edwards Bath (4-0 and 3-0) whilst the 2nd XI drew 1-1 and 3rd XI won 6-0 in their matches away at Exeter School. The U15A’s played in a home tournament against some tough opposition, they were knocked out in the pre-liminary rounds but demonstrated great potential for the season ahead. The 1st XI had a very successful home tournament beating Taunton School, Canford, Kings Taunton and Warminster to make it to the finals against King Edwards Southampton where they lost in the last 4 minutes to a penalty flick. It was a nail-biting performance in which Sophie M and Tilly W earnt a special mention playing up for the first time.

Lacrosse has seen a number of changes to the way it is played as part of its bid to be included as an Olympic sport in future games. Girls picking up their lacrosse sticks after the summer are having to learn new rules and manage with less players on the field. At the weekend they travelled to Cheltenham Ladies and Moreton Hall on a mini-tour to help strengthen team bonds and consolidate their new style of play.

The Westies were in action on Wednesday playing a home fixture against Clayesmore Prep School. They had a brilliant start to their hockey at Sherborne Girls, particularly as many of them were playing in their first ever match.
