Sporting Highlights week ending 24 January 2020

It has been a comparatively quiet week of sport with limited fixtures on Saturday, so that the whole school community could be involved in celebrating the confirmation of a number girls. That said, we did take the U18C lacrosse team away to Canford to play their first team and although the weather was bitterly cold the girls had a fantastic game. Lauren had a debut performance in goal and did a splendid job saving multiple attempts by the opposition to score. Our own team were short on attacking players but there were some great goals from Hayley and Sophie. After an hour of play we were all very grateful to retreat to warmth of the Canford dining room with a finishing score line of 6-13 to Canford. At home the remaining lacrosse coaches, supported by our L6 sports ambassadors, played host to a prep school triangular tournament with Port Regis and Knighton House. After some coaching, the teams played small-sided games so that all the girls could put into practice what they had learned. It was brilliant to see such sportsmanship and enthusiasm from the players - we might even have found some future lax players!

Our focus on creating as many opportunities to sample different sports as possible was exemplified this week with the start of our new fencing club, arranged jointly with Sherborne School and Sherborne Prep, which is open to beginners as well as more experienced fencers. We had our first competitive climbing fixture against Sunninghill using the Oxley bouldering wall, the climbers worked in pairs to score points as they attempted to pick the shortest routes up graded climbs, testing their strength, agility and team-work. Also, our 1st XI Football team were in action against Leweston School in a very successful away fixture ending in a 1-1 draw following a superb goal from Alice.

Our team of the week is undoubtedly the Intermediate Cross Country team who having been crowned county champions, following their performance last week in Bournemouth, went on to win the Ken Bailey Intermediate Race hosted at Bryanston on Thursday. There were some very feisty performances, particularly from Birdie who challenged the lead runner, and 1st place English Schools champion, to a photo finish on the line. The winning A team made up of Birdie (2nd), Hebe (4th), Sophie (6th) and Emily (7th) were delighted with their results but so too were the B team who took Bronze with some great performances from Selene (12th), Georgia (16th), Anabel (19th) and Charlotte (27th). The girls train year round as endurance athletes and it is very rewarding to see their efforts translating into such success on cross-country circuit.

Good luck to our skiers who leave for British School Girls races in Flaine this weekend and also our riders who will be competing in the NSEA Eventers’ Challenge in Chippenham.
