Sports Highlights week ending 30 January 2020

Whilst many of us were enjoying a quiet weekend recovering from a busy first few weeks of term, our skiers and riders were preparing to complete. We are thrilled to hear news from the ski slopes in Flaine. Ski Captain, Millie, won the U18 Girls Unregistered Giant Slalom, the U18 Girls Unregistered Slalom and the U18 Girls Unregistered Combined event and took 3rd place overall in the Under 18 Girls Giant Slalom. Millie was supported by team-mates; Sophie who finished 7th in the U18 Girls Giant Slalom; Alice who finished 12th in the U16 Girls Unregistered Giant Slalom and Izzy who finished 13th. Also making the team this year were Islay and Lottie who were skiing for the first time in Flaine and had an amazing experience. The Sherborne Girls A team finished 7th overall and but for an administrative error would have finished 1st in the Unregistered team event. A fantastic performance!

Mid-week, our young netballers played in a very successful fixture against Clayesmore Prep. After some fairly miserable weather, the girls were delighted to have a glimpse of sunshine and were eager to demonstrate the netball skills which they have been working on in training. The improvements in precision of passing, neat footwork and accuracy of shooting were evident on the court and showed clearly in the results. Well done to Kythe, Flora, Isla and Amaka who were all voted players of the match.

Thursday provided another opportunity for our cross-country runners to shine. The conditions at Milton Abbey were favourable, mild with low cloud and almost no wind. However, this course is always a true cross-country challenge and this year was no exception, even after a few alterations to divert away from incredibly slippery slopes, it was going to be tough. First up were the Intermediate team, this is an age group where we have strength in numbers and despite a few absentees we still looked formidable. Birdie continued her run of good form, leading the way for SG with Hebe looking strong in hot pursuit. With 4 of our top 6 runners fresh from the challenge of the Parliament Hill race last weekend, they looked confident taking on this tough course and we were delighted that they all finished in the top 10 taking the Intermediate team trophy. Marianna had requested to run the senior course today, a brave decision considering the 6.8km distance and the formidable extra loop up a very tough hill, but after a fabulous finish in 33rd place on Hampstead Heath she was more than up for the challenge. She was accompanied by Emily, Eve, Isabel and Sophie, who was also running for the first time in an SG vest, all should be complimented after completing this incredibly tough course. Marianna had an outstanding run, leading from the gun and crossing the line in first place taking the Gold medal.
