Sporting Highlights week ending 7 February 2020

Last weekend Sherborne Girls took two senior teams to St Helen & St Katherine's School in Abingdon to play in the Top Test Classic. The purpose of the day was to prepare for the intensity of tournament play at the Nationals and they certainly gained from the experience. With some excellent wins against Queen Anne’s, Godolphin and Tudor Hall, the girls will all be feeling much more confident in their ability to play against some of the top lacrosse schools in the Country. The weekend also saw some lovely results for the U15A and U14A teams who both won against Marlborough and the U14B team who won their match against Milton Abbey.

All our netball teams have had challenging fixtures over the last week with a fairly even balance of successes and losses. The game that earnt the accolade of ‘team of the week’ was the U13A team who had a fantastic game against Dauntsey’s. The girls were nervous before the match began but were first to score and this boosted their spirits straightaway. The first quarter was closely fought but Dauntsey's entered the break marginally ahead with 5 goals to 4. Both teams continued to play well in the second half and Amaka made some excellent intercepts. The half time score was 11-8 to Dauntsey's, but this did not faze Sherborne, and shooters Kate and Kythe really shone in the second half. By three-quarter time Dauntsey's were still ahead 15-13, but the girls were determined to win, and did they ever! In the final three minutes of the match Sherborne drew level, converted an interception and scored off their final centre pass, finally winning 22-20! It was an absolute pleasure to see the girls emerge victorious having fought so hard, whilst keeping such cool heads! Well done to them all.

The badminton team who were away in a Triangular tournament against Wellington and Millfield last Saturday played amazingly. They won 10-4 against Millfield and drew 6-6 against Wellington with some intense and close matches. Anna played with the team for the first time, playing both doubles and singles. Daisy and Kelly led the way with incredible playing, creating a hugely enjoyable afternoon.

Looking ahead to the end of term, parents might like to make a note that the U15, U14 and U13 lacrosse teams will be playing in the South West Rally on the last day of term, Saturday 21 March, at Sherborne Girls. We very much hope we can count on your support on what will hopefully be a fabulous day of lacrosse where we are playing host to several schools from across the region. The Rally will start at 10.00am and final matches are scheduled to finish at 4.00pm.
