Sporting highlights week ending 13 March 2020

Sports Bulletin

With the benefit of the much-improved weather conditions, including a reduction in the amount of wind, the girls were able to show off their skill and increased confidence and accuracy in passing on the netball courts. All eight matches against St Mary’s Shaftesbury resulted in convincing wins. The Westies who were playing a mixture of games against Sherborne Prep and Knighton House, had 2 wins and 2 losses which was a great result bearing in mind so many of the girls have been poorly and were recuperating in house.

A number of the other scheduled fixtures last week were sadly cancelled, mainly due to water-logged pitches. Fixtures that were affected included the U18 A, B and C matches against St Mary’s Calne, however, the girls were able to make up for their disappointment by taking on the Sherborne School 1st XV Rugby team in a friendly match mid-week. This annual fixture was tightly contested and required the skill of some very expert umpires to keep the play within safe parameters. No-one was hurt and the girls came away triumphant with a score of 8-6. Other success on the lacrosse pitch came from the U13A team who beat S Mary’s Calne in spectacular fashion 7-6. Special mentions went to Tash for her speed in midfield and scoring a superb goal and Mary for getting joint player of the match on her birthday!

The cross-country team had their final inter-school race of the season on Thursday at Clayesmore. This event is always a favourite and involves a challenging water obstacle and numerous jumps. It is definitely not for the faint hearted and requires considerable courage from the girls to leap into the waist high water and stride across to the other bank. Many a runner has come a cropper and this year was no exception with Charlotte and Issy ending up fully submerged. This didn’t slow them down and we conclude the season with another round of medals for the Intermediate team who finished 1st and the Seniors who finished 3rd. Our final cross-country event this season is the Inter-House Castle Challenge which takes place on Thursday and will see the whole school out running in the beautiful surrounds of the Sherborne Castle estate.

Our thanks this week goes to the Sports Leaders in Middle Fifth who under guidance of Mr Bell have hosted and run two events for the benefit of our local Primary Schools. On Wednesday they organised and umpired a Netball tournament for the primary schools in North Dorset and on Friday they played a supporting role in the Quick Sticks Hockey Festival arranged Miss Dixon. These events are an opportunity for us to support our local community and are great fun for all involved.

We are regularly checking advice from Public Health England on whether it is appropriate to host and participate in sporting fixtures and will respond in line with the guidance provided by them on Covid 19. Please do check SOCS before travelling to watch your daughter in a fixture and be mindful that other schools have requested parents who have travelled to the areas affected do not attend matches for the time being.
