Sports Highlights - 27 April 2023

It is hard to believe we are in the cricket season with the weather more akin to mid-winter. However, we managed to dodge the rain and battle the wind to play Clayesmore in the U15 Schools Sports National Cup on Wednesday, taking a team 11 budding cricketers. The girls were put into bat first and scored 132 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. Rose W-D was a standout player achieving 24 runs off 26 balls including two 4s followed by a superb bowling performance, achieving 3 wickets for 5 runs off her 4 overs, including 1 wicket maiden. Other wickets were taken by Alice D (2), Grace J (1) and Arabella W (1). Chloe A took a one-handed catch, Arabella W took a direct hit onto the stumps to run out the opposition and Rose W-D took a catch off her own bowling, ending in a spectacular tumble. Shot of the day went to Primrose G for a textbook forward drive for 4. The final outcome was a win for SG with Clayesmore being bowled out for 76. Other cricketing highlights last week included a win for the West 1st and 3rd team in their first game of the term.

The tennis squads train year-round and therefore are quite accustomed to playing in inclement weather. A top up session at the start of term concluded their pre-season build-up and ensured the teams were match ready for their first encounter of the term against Bryanston School. It was a stunning performance with 8 wins including all U15 and U14 teams and only narrow losses for the U18 C and D teams. The U18 A team won 6-3 with some fantastic rallies to watch. Our 1st pair, Alice P and Charlotte U, playing together for the first time, convincingly won all 3 matches (6-1, 6-1, 6-3) with some spectacular volleys at the net from Alice and some impressive winning lobs from Charlotte. Well done to all our teams and best of luck with the next fixture against Marlborough!

The athletics team competed in the Sherborne Lutra alongside Bryanston, Canford, Clayesmore, Dauntsey’s and Kingswood in their first competition of the season on Saturday. With girls competing in all 3 strings in both field and track, we were delighted to finish the competition in overall 2nd place. Captain of Athletics, Zara V, put in a winning performance in the high jump clearing 156cm, Coco H thew an impressive 23.99m in the javelin and Amaka A won the shotput with a distance of 7.92m. Congratulations to all who took part.
